Let’s Talk Tech: 5 Simple (and Free) Ways New Doulas Can Get Noticed Online

April 29, 20255 min read

Feeling overwhelmed by all the tech tools people say you “have” to use as a new Birth Doula? Take a deep breath. You don’t need to do everything at once—and you definitely don’t need to spend a fortune.

In this post, I’m walking you through five free and simple tech steps you can take right now to start showing up professionally and getting found by potential clients. These are the same basics I recommend to every new Doula I mentor, and they’re perfect for building early momentum—before you ever worry about SEO, websites, or paid ads.

1. Set Up Your Google Business Profile

Think of this as your digital storefront.

When someone in your area types “birth doula near me” into Google, your Business Profile is what helps you show up in the map results. It’s free, it’s powerful, and it’s one of the best ways to start getting found locally.

Make sure you include:

  • A clear business name (even if it's just your full name for now)

  • The city/area you serve (but make sure you make your home address not visible)

  • A professional looking photo of you

  • A short description of what you offer and who you serve

  • Contact details and your hours of availability

📸 Pro Tip: Upload a few photos, even if they’re just a headshot or pictures of your doula bag or printed materials. It helps your profile feel real and trustworthy. Update your profile at least once a month. You can even repurpose your social media content.

2. Optimize Your Instagram or Facebook Bio

Don’t underestimate the power of a well-written bio. This is one of the first things potential clients will read—so make it clear, professional, and personable.

Use this space to share:

  • Who you help

  • What kind of support you offer

  • Where you’re located

  • A link to learn more or reach out

Also, you can use a tool like Milkshake or Linktree (both have free plans) to create a “mini website” that hosts your key links—like your contact form, intro call booking, or free resource.

Pro Tip: If you have the resources to invest in a website consider using a ready-to-go doula website template like this one:

It’s already set up with great SEO, so it’s a great option to get a site set up quickly that can actually rank in Google sooner than most!

3. Create a Simple Scheduling Link

Make it easy for potential clients to connect with you. A scheduling tool looks professional, saves time, and removes the back-and-forth of trying to set up a call.

Here are three free options:

  • Calendly – clean, simple, and widely used

  • Square Appointments – free and includes reminders

  • Acuity (by Squarespace) – great for service-based businesses

Even if you only offer a “Get to Know You” chat right now, it shows you're organized and available.4. Start Growing an Email List (Even If You Don’t Feel Ready)

If social media disappeared tomorrow, how would you stay in touch with potential clients? That’s where email comes in.

You don’t need a big list or fancy marketing funnel. Just start small—with a free account and a helpful download or checklist you can offer in exchange for an email address.

Here are some of the best free email providers (as of April 2025):

  • Kit (formerly ConvertKit)– free for up to 1,000 subscribers, great for creators

  • Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) – good free tier and simple to use

  • Flodesk – visually beautiful but more limited on the free plan

  • MailerLite – beginner-friendly and clean

Start by creating a form people can use to sign up, then send them a welcome message. Keep it warm and simple.

5. Reserve Your Name Across Platforms

This might not feel urgent, but it’s a smart move. Even if you’re not using every social platform yet, go ahead and grab your name (or business name) as a handle on:

  • Instagram

  • Facebook

  • YouTube

  • TikTok

  • Gmail

Bonus: If you’re thinking long-term, consider purchasing your domain name (like [yourname]doula.com) through sites like Namecheap or GoDaddy. You don’t need to build a full website yet—just owning the name gives you options.

You Don’t Have to Master It All at Once

Starting your doula business online doesn’t have to be complicated. Think of these tools as your “starter kit” for visibility and professionalism. Pick one or two to begin with, and let yourself grow into the rest over time.

And when you’re ready for more advanced tools—like writing your own content or building a brand voice—I’ve got something in the works that will help you simplify that part, too. 😉
